After walking into the bedroom to get my purse (or: my MaryPoppins’Bag, as it is more honestly used, and stuffed full to the brim) last night, having startled Chris out of sleep and, seemingly, out of his own skin.
“Aaaaaaaaaaahhh!” And then, upon seeing it was just me: myriad, unspellable, groans of relief.
Cue me: simultaneously apologizing and laughing, so hilarious was how quickly he went from “peacefully sleeping” to “Self-Defense Stance, The Half-Asleep Version,” arms outstretched in judo-chop! configuration and everything.
“You are so adorable when you get that ‘Back UP, or I’m Going To Cut You’ look in your eyes.”
“It’s a good thing I had recently got up to go to the bathroom; I would have soiled myself just then.”
“Are you sure you didn’t?”
“Not entirely.”
I haven’t run a 5k since 2005, when my sister and I signed up to “trot” a Race for the Cure in Portland and then on race day, about twenty minutes before we were set to briskly walk with the rest of the meanders, she asked if we could run.
